What is Speculative Futures Amsterdam?

Speculative Futures Amsterdam, a local chapter of the global platform Speculative Futures.

Speculative Futures is an international community of meetups focused on Speculative & Critical Design, Design Fiction, Futurism, and Strategy & Foresight and any vision or approach which involves using design as a vehicle to speculate about potential or alternate futures.

We host speakers — practitioners, designers, artists, teachers, students, and other professionals who will be talking about relevant praxis and methods and inspiring projects about future thinking and envisioning futures.

We also host workshops that will allow you to learn how to conduct and apply futures thinking in a variety of circumstances as a method of synthesis and strategy.

New Meetup coming up! => Thursday May 23 – 2024 at 17:00u – 19:00u

We want to invite you to our new meetup with the optimistic theme ‘Hope for the future’ !
No need to be gloomy, because we are going to create a bright future together!

With a ‘Magic Machine’ workshop and plenty of positive developments.
The ‘Magic Machine’-workshop makes the participants create a ‘magic machine’ (with cardboards) to create an ideal future state. This machine will solve your issue. But the key is to make it specific.’

What?: Intro on the theme ‘Hope’, Magic machine-workshop, discussion, chat with drinks and snacks.
When? : Thursday May 23 at 17:00u – 19:00u

Who are we?

The Speculative Futures Amsterdam chapter is founded by Theo Ploeg of Studio Hyperspace together with Mick Jongeling. The Speculative Futures Amsterdam chapter is now led by Mari Fujiwara researcher and facilitator at Digital Society School and Nicole Spit of DesignStudio Dáárheen.

Nicole Spit, organizer and co-lead of Speculative futures Amsterdam. Nicole is a speculative designer, originating in productdesign, and owner of Studio Dáárheen. ‘I convert striking findings or issues that amaze me from my (trend-) research into speculative design and art objects’.

Mari Fujiwara, organizer and co-lead of Speculative Futures Amsterdam. Mari is a researcher and facilitator at Digital Society School Amsterdam, with a background in philosophy and new media. She likes engaging on topics around societal challenges in interactive and playful ways, and that is how she got interested in speculative design. Her current side project is developing a video game which touches on social exhaustion and the theme is to escape a family Christmas dinner

Theo Ploeg, initiator of Speculative Futures Amsterdam,SFA ambassador and in his own words “Renegade sociologist caught up in design, uses speculative design to tell meaningful and positive stories of alternative realities’. Theo is owner of Studio Hyperspace.
