KAALSTAART festival 2025 , group exhibition on historic cargo ships, with 'Organoids' by artist and speculative designer Nicole Spit

PRESS RELEASE

Subject Line: Exhibition Announcement: Living Imagination ‘ORGANOIDS’ – Where Art Meets Biotechnology

I’m excited to share news of an extraordinary upcoming exhibition at Kaalstaart festival.

( Previous : at KunstenaarCentrumBergen, in museum Kranenburgh in Bergen.)

‘This group exhibition of STEM art, #artscience , will showcase a variety of artistic expressions, and among them is the compelling work of Nicole Spit, who brings a unique focus on speculative design inspired by biotechnological advancements. STEM art, or Bèta art draws inspiration from science, technology and nature. Visual art, stage art, research and new cooperations will be shown to the audience in and around a number of historic cargo ships.

Below are the key details of the exhibition:

Title: Living Imagination: Speculative Designs Inspired by Organoids

when and where:

April 5 and 6, ship ‘EESTROOM’, Insteekhaven aan de Nijverheidsweg-Noord, Amersfoort | 12u – 17u

April 12 and 13, ship ‘EESTROOM’, Schuttevaerkade, Zwolle | 12u – 17u

April 18 – 21, ship ‘EESTROOM’ , Zuiderhaven Groningen | 12u – 17u

April 26 and 27, ship ‘EESTROOM’, Grootdiep , Dokkum | 12u – 17u

This project is inspired by artificially cultured tissue models, known as organoids. In laboratories, these miniature organs, created from cultured cells, are used as research models that lay the foundation for breakthroughs in medical science.

Nicole Spit, a speculative designer and visual artist, presents pieces that explore the ethical, social, and environmental implications of biotechnology. Her work incorporates materials such as glass, ceramics, lenticular prints, and polymer clay, blurring the boundaries between art and science. The exhibition invites audiences to reflect on the future of life and the role of design in shaping it.

At the Kaalstaart festival, Nicole Spit adds a distinctive perspective to the group, enriching the exhibition’s diversity with her focus on speculative design and art-science dialogue.’

About the Artist:
Nicole Spit is a speculative designer and artist whose work has been featured in prominent exhibitions such as the international group exhibition ‘Digestible’ at Artcenter Artphy, where she presented her vision of the future of the Fava Bean through six works of art in 2023. Her artproject about preserving trees in a virtual reality, ‘Digital Tree Monument’ was first presented in 2022 in Castricum. And in 2018 she presented ‘NeoBio, a vision on the influence of biotech on productdesign’ at the Dutch Design Week. Her creations merge artistic expression with scientific inquiry, posing provocative questions about the future of human and ecological systems in a world of accelerating technological progress. Additionally, she is the co-lead of Speculative Futures Amsterdam.
